The Impact

Small businesses often fail early on in their journeys due to a combination of factors including:

  1. Inadequate planning and lack of a comprehensive business plan

  2. Insufficient capital to cover initial expenses and sustain operations during the early stages.

  3. Lack of market research and a failure to understand the target audience, competitive landscape, and industry trends can lead to product or service offerings that don't meet market demands.

  4. Weak marketing strategies which cause small businesses often struggle to gain visibility and attract customers.

  5. Ineffective customer engagement and failing to establish strong customer relationships

  6. Operational inefficiencies including inadequate processes and operational inefficiencies

  7. Inability to adapt to a constantly evolving business landscape and changing market dynamics

  8. Legal and regulatory challenges including compliance issues, required licenses, and permits

Even before the global pandemic due to Covid-19, data shows that eight out of every 10 Black businesses failed within the first 18 months while 58% of Black business owners describe the health of their businesses as “at risk” or “distressed. “(Boston Globe, 2022)
